What was killer cheeseball one edition gets hit with the nerfbat in the next, all in the name of "balance" (and really, in the name of profit, because nothing ever actually balances except the gamemakers' checkbooks when you spend more money to buy whatever'll keep you winning.) We've talked a little on this blog before about making themey lists instead of cheesy lists, making characters instead of powergaming, that sort of thing... the idea that some armies/classes/specs/colors/whatever are more powerful than others is pretty standard, right?

I got into 40k about...oh... early 2004? Something like that. And I didn't really build my own army until the Witch Hunters codex came out in that summer, and I became a decent player during that fall after the 4th edition rulebook came out. I was a newbie to the geek world at the time, and although I understood that some armies were cheesier than others (or beardier...do people still say beardy? We used to say beardy.) I didn't understand that this could change at the drop of a hat. A combination of MtG, WoW, 40k, and D&D taught me this.

Anyway, fast forward nearly 10 years, and now I understand that while blue might rule in this set, it's one prerelease away from being kindling, and while my holy numbers pale in comparison to the discoball next to me, give it a patch and I could well be back on top...or at the very least we could both be underneath a paladin. (Why is it always a paladin?)

Right, 40k. For years, Khorne was the end-all be-all of armies. 26 points for a whole group of power-weapon toting models that deep strike to annihilate everything in their path? Helllooooooo! And Khorne berserkers - an extra attack and bloodrage across the board? Why not?! Khornate possessed with rending claws - charge into melee on turn two, four attacks off the charge and sixes deny armor saves? There's no downside! I played all of fourth in a bitchin' khorne army, part of 5th before my demons got ripped away from me, and then took some time off until the new Chaos codex came out for 6th edition. Sometime during that time off, it became Khorne's turn to take a nerf.

Yep, that's right. I am officially no longer playing the flavor of the month. Or decade, as it were.

I don't mean to sound like my khorne can't win - it can, and does - but when put up against a very good player with a very good list, especially one dedicated to the other Chaos gods, and especially if they forsake all idea of character or theme and build to kill? I'm doomed, DOOMED! I LOVE my khornate army, with their red and gold paint job and their massive handfuls of dice ("Let's see, that's three Mutilators, so two attacks base plus one for two close combat weapons plus two for charging is five attacks each, fifteen total, with power axes and rerolls because I hate space marines, then my lord, that's three attacks base plus one for two close combat weapons, plus two for charging, plus d6 for the demon weapon..rolled a four...that's 10 attacks from him....25 attacks total.") but I'm not quite as big a fan of getting tabled by a god that used to get laughed at. Since when are Nurgle and Slaanesh so damn good? WTF!

How do you reconcile your army falling through the nerftree and hitting every branch on the way down? Swap armies? Deal with the loss? Build the cheesiest list you can? Take some time off and enter some painting contests?

*sigh, grumble, growl*Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11220363713548047132noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-16879198225455120862013-03-28T01:19:00.000-07:002013-03-28T01:21:22.205-07:00Fun With Tyranids: DevilpodsI was thinking to myself what could I do to make War Dolls weird or quirky, or in general fun or something. Well I thought about me and my Tyranids, as well as the various different units and tactic combos that I have used in the past. Most of them I have tried on the idea of a friend of mine, but regardless they are fun ideas and quirky things you can do with Tyranids. So here begins our first episode of Fun with Tyranids.

FUN WITH TYRANIDS: DEVILPODS

Yeah, I know, it is a bit melodramatic, but hey, I am just having fun here so let us dive on in.

Devilpods, or Termagants with Devourers in Mycetic Spores, can be really neat addition to your army, especially if you want to surprise the shite out of your opponent. You can fit 20 of these bad girls in a pod, and come second turn drop them in wherever you want to wreak havoc on all your enemies butts. That is right, butts.

The nice part is because Synapse is checked at the beginning of the turn, before reserves come in, you don't have to worry about Instinctive Behavior the first turn they come in. So essentially you get to drop 60 str 4 ap - shots 18 inches around a pod, and you have a nice 6 inch deploy area thanks to the most recent FAQ on teh bugs. So you get a nice big range of tons and tons of shots to mess their day up, and it appears where it isn't good for them....usually.

Much like a Space Marine Drop Pod, the Spore is a really versatile little deep strike delivery mechanism. It is very reliable and not very likely to mishap, leading to more and more useful placements working to your advantage.

Nice part, you get to do all this delightful awesomeness for the low low price of 240 points. Ok yeah for Termagants this is very expensive, but the point is you get heavy mobility, tons of shots where you want them to be, which even better is where your enemy doesn't want them to be. I suggest running at least one in any list you run with bugs, as it is fun and effective.

So, long story short, run these buggers...see what I did there...buggers

Pretty standard reality series, right?

But here's the oddity. As the game progressed, one by one, the male nerds were eliminated, but the females were untouched. In fact, of the final five, four were female. And the final three? All women. So, yeah, the first King of the Nerds, at least according to reality TV, was a queen.

And that's pretty cool! How empowering for little nerdy females to watch these strong women compete and win, to watch these women embrace their nerdiness and win the cash prize! To see them take down the men one after the other and remain standing as the strongest of nerd-kind!

The problem is, though, that these women weren't left in the finale because they fought and triumphed. They were left in the finale because they were by and large ignored by the men. Over and over again the nerds had to nominate people to go to the elimination rounds ("nerd-offs") and of course, the nerds voted in the people they perceived to be the biggest threat. At those perceived big threats? All male. Only one of the women was given a second glance, and when the dust settled at the end of it, the last nerd standing was a woman who had basically flown under the radar the entire time. She'd never been to a nerd-off, never dominated a challenge, never made herself out to be a threat and since she didn't step up to the plate and show herself as important, all those guys automatically assumed they didn't have to worry about her.

What does it say about the nerdy gamer culture that these things still happen? Should I expect my male opponents in 40k to go easy on me because I'm female? Should I expect my guildies in WoW to forgive lower healing numbers and carry me through heroics because I have a higher-pitched voice on vent? Should I step aside and let the guys stutter and stumble their way through teaching a newbie how to roll a character in D&D, even though I'm a ten-year veteran player and (gasp) actually a teacher?

Personally, my answer is no to all of those things. I'm kind of naturally shy, but when someone says (or implies) that I'm not as good as they are for any reason, it raises my hackles, if you will. My numbers in WoW stand up to any other healer or DPS. My 40k list can win games without being slapped with the cheese-label (and it's characterful and themey, too!). And when someone's struggling with a character sheet, I can't help but jump in.

I hope that things like this blog, seeing Beth walk around the game store in six-inch platforms, and Cami running - not just participating in - the current 40k campaign, will do things to make the males of the nerd-world see us more as equals, as viable opponents instead of eye candy. But, until then, does anyone know when the next King of the Nerd auditions are? I could use a hundred thousand dollars...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11220363713548047132noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-81218696581097145352013-03-24T15:29:00.000-07:002013-03-26T21:15:42.901-07:00I'll Get You Yet, Nurgle!

I may be a newcomer to the gaming community, but I have been
overwhelmed by how accepting and welcoming everyone is. I have learned a lot of
different games from Magic to Warhammer to Pathfinder, and have loved every
minute of it. (By the way, don’t let my inexperience fool you – I learn
quickly.)

My latest endeavor has been a campaign for Warhammer 40k. I’m
currently running Battle Sisters, but I am in the process of switching to Tau.
Close combat scares the crap out of me, so my basic strategy is kill everything
in sight before it can get across the board and in close-combat range of my
army, which I hear is the way of the Tau. (Plus, I think the Tau will
look great in the hot pink and black color scheme I have in mind for their
armor.)

Not going to lie – the shoot-first-ask-questions-later
method has been really effective thus far considering my squad consists of a
flamer, a heavy flamer, my Canoness and her plasma pistol, and 16 more battle
sisters. I also run an immolator that boasts twin-linked heavy flamers and a
dozer blade, but the weapon gets destroyed pretty quickly once it’s on the
board. However, there is a lone traumatized Nurgle running around somewhere
that must still be having nightmares about the Battle Sisters’ Immolator that
scattered and then ran down all his friends. I may not be able to shoot you,
but getting run over by a transporter will certainly do the trick. *squish*

To be perfectly honest, I’m not thrilled with the Nurgle

word you want to use, I have deemed it my mission to destroy all Nurgle I come

The group is currently playing another system (World of Darkness) and I was invited to sit in on the end of that but I detest vampires, sparkly or no. Nevertheless they are role and not 'roll' players so I'll be giving them a shot.

Enter the dilemma! What should I play? I have been running D&D games for so long, that I wasn't even sure any more. I've played a lot of characters in ancient history, and made plenty more as NPCs, but haven't had one of my very own to hug and squeeze and .. yeah you get the idea.

Well from my last few campaigns, I had one that I enjoyed immensely from the DM standpoint, and my players seemed to love as much, if not more. It was the adventures of a brash and angry dwarf pirate captain and his merry band of miscreants. They tore up and down the Forgotten Realms' Sword coast, making waves (in both senses of the word) and never giving half a care. Thanks to the Stormwrack suppliment, the Captain was the only crewmember who wasn't a water breather.

So from that, I decided I wanted to play a sea elf druid or cleric. I thought it would be a great challenge finding water for her to return to every so often so she didn't suffocate.I used my other players' (I had 2 in my prior game) experience and roleplay as a basis for my own character. I fleshed out a quick character history of a devout from the deep who was exploring the surface world and looking to spread the holy word to the air breathers.

Sadly my DM said no to water breathing elves, so back to the drawing board I went.

And I was going to have a singing lobster for an animal companion too!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094231701233567830noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-22643539684578166122013-02-15T18:43:00.001-08:002013-02-15T18:56:42.429-08:00Photos-as foretoldPhotos I took with the new phone on a blog written on the new phone.
The Sisters Project has been back in swing for a few weeks now and chugging along hard core. I have set a goal to have a 2K point force ready for the Atlanta Series Feb 24th tournament.

I've played in the last two events and done fair enough all things considered. Favorite Opponent in the first and (tied for) Best Painted in the second. I played my Chaos Marines the first tourney as the new codex had just come out and rushed to paint them all. In the second tournament I switched to my Eldar for reasons and since they were 95% painted it didn't take much to finish them. Sadly, I don't think I got any photos of them. You'll have to be appeased with some beautiful art I found in the intertubes.

I'm not sure what prompted me to switch to Sisters. It could be that I lost my face with the Eldar. Two very bad losses in the first two rounds, a scraped by win in the last round. The Chaos irked me in that my Slannesh army is very close combat oriented and I'm miffed by the 2D6 charge range. I like it, but failing two charges in a row with Lucius is enough to burn anyone. It could also be that I didn't have any allies with either army. I own 6 armies and none of them want to co-operate with one another as Battle Brethren. Except Sisters and Guard, neither of which are in any semblance of being table ready (and for me that means "painted").

Sisters had been started, and I've been wanting to play them, so off I go. I built a list that looks pretty good so far, with Guard allies. I picked a veteran squad for lack of figures needing painting and also, I'm running both (Sisters with a Vet ally) in my current 40k campaign as well. Double purpose wins!!

Setting myself a deadline and repurposing a minis carrier as a small painting station, I've been able to paint figures at work when it's slow later at night and can turn out 5-7 figures a night. Hopefully by this weekend I'll have them all done and can turn my eye to the vehicles. Vehicles are fast and easy (and mostly painted already).

The toughest part right now is that my bases aren't even started. I was considering getting Secret Weapon's Trench bases, but they seem to be out of production (I can't find them on the web) and the LGS only has 30. These seem to be the closest I can find to a 'mud and muck' base. I need 52 so I'm looking at $60 in expense. For that I could make and duplicate my own, but that takes time and that is the issue.

No matter what, this is the part I live for. I love this part of the hobby. <3Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094231701233567830noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-32451297232664913482013-01-21T01:59:00.002-08:002013-01-21T01:59:26.886-08:00Flyer Wave in March RumoursSo rumour has it that in March we are getting a few new fliers, and I am really looking forward to this as my army seems to be getting one. So here is the list:

Tau:
Some new thing for them, meant as an anti-flier I have heard

Dark Eldar:
All rumours point to the voidraven

Eldar:
Something totally new, which I am totally excited for.

Tyranid:
There are two schools of though on this one.
1) There is only going to be a single model kit, the Harpy
2) There is going to be a dual kit, the harpy, and something else that will be antiflier.

There is also a lot of hope that the harpy will get a rules update so it doesn't suck so hard. To be honest, even if the rules didn't change and I was stuck with the sucky harpy, dont care. I want that kit, its a unit I have wanted to have a model for and play around with it for fun. So I am super hoping it will be a dual kit, but I will be happy either way. Also will be cool to get my brother a flier for his eldar, which are starting to look really good. Red Dire Avengers, who knew?

Game 1- vs Necrons with wraithstar, 3 fliers and annihilation barges, immortals in 2 of fliers, and 2 destroyer lords. I won by 3 victory points

Game 2- vs Necrons with 2 destroyer lords, scarabs, 4 spiders, and 4 fliers full of immortals. This list destroyed me the whole game, it was a really tough game

Game 3- vs drop pod space wolf list, and a landraider. He ended up getting 1 victory point to my 8, I kind of felt bad, because once I took out njal, my psychic shriek spam just ripped him to shreds.

Game 4- vs my friend's necron list, 3 ghost arks with 9 warriors in each, 3 annihilation barges, 2 wraithstars with destroyer lords each, and one squad tesla immortals. In the beginning I was doing fine, then the last two turns it turned around and the necrons just ripped me apart. I ended up getting 0 victory points to his 8, it was rough, fun game still, but rough. This friend of mine, I have always had trouble taking on this list, so its one of those hurdles I hope to overcome some day.

Game 5- vs Tau with space wolf allies, 2 hammer heads, shaso squad, 2 broadsides, crisis suit squad, 3 squads firewarriors 1 devilfish, 2 rhinos with greyguard (one mark of the wolfen) and a rune priest with JoWW. This one was back and fourth the whole time, and we ended up tying the game 5 to 5. The whole game we were just going back and fourth really hurting each other, was a really fun and intense game.

My list: Flyrant with 2 TL devourers, Troop tervigon with adrenals and toxins, 10 devilgants, 20 toxin hormies, 2 squads 3 warriors with deathspitters and a barbed strangler, doom in a pod (MVP hands down), 3 zoeys in a pod (ran shriek the whole time), 3 hive guard, dakkafex, trygon with adrenals

Overall I did fairly well, better than I thought I would have, and got 22 out of 35 in the listings. Not amazing no, but considering how people think of tyranids these days I think I did rather well. I really did very well in 2 games, had a fun but even game, then 2 really bad ones. I had a lot of fun though and it was a great tournament. I wanna tweak my list to make it better for future ones, and will probably change up deployments a bit.
(40K)

Played a learning game with another new person. Despite me trying to assist him with placement (Do you REALLY want to put Sicarius there?, You should shoot that at this, etc) I still managed to pull a win.

Star of the show (other than me) was the Mace swinging Party Prince Cacophonus. He'll be signing autographs in the lobby.

Daemon Prince, Black Mace, Wings, of Slannesh, Psy level 1 (Primaris power), Power Armor.

So hanging out in the back, the Prince was surprised to find a drop pod plummeting to earth (despite my discouraging such actions, as I KNEW what the response would be). The Sternguard and Sicarius hopped out and flung Vengance rounds all over creation. The prince hopped over the Predator, charged in and pointed at Sicarius while roaring an incoherent challenge. Sicarius, hesitant, drew his sword, readying his deadliest strike but was immediately smashed repeatedly in the skull before he knew what was going on. The Daemon contained in the mace, tasting blood immediately drew in his life force and the life force of a nearby Terminator marine. Cacophonus smashed a few Sternguard heads in and then the remaining Terminators rushed in, but the sergeant leapt to the forefront. The Prince called him out too, and split open the ancient Terminator armor as if it were paper. The marine's blood sprayed everywhere. Again the Daemon within shifted within the warp, and the remaining two Terminators fell over dead. Meanwhile the remaining Sternguard were stomped to death by an angry Helbrute.

So I say the Prince + Mace is a VERY awesome combo. Granted my learner didn't understand what the implications of placing his drop pod there were, but I did offer him to pick it up and advise him it would be very bad. He insisted and I got a full on test of the Black (mace) Prince. Ever the gambler am I, and betting on the long odds won me a battlefield of empty Termie armor and all I had to do was challenge two champions.

Sadly Lucius has yet to make combat in any of my games thusfar. I think I'm playing him too far afield? The vehicle rules have me a little scared to rush in. Next time, Lucius, next time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094231701233567830noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-87984611219439671742012-10-05T10:42:00.001-07:002012-10-05T10:42:54.558-07:00MotivationMotivation is a fickle fickle Mistress, really hard to pin down, and it has always been my major issue when it comes to painting. I don't really ever like doing anything alone, and painting is no exception, so sometimes when no one is here to paint with me, motivation to paint is very difficult for me.

Well my big motivator of late is that on October 20-21 there is a big tournament, grand tournament, going on in my area. The tourney requires tournament level painting (which my scheme covers hands down), but the trick is painting all of my bugs. I mean I buttered my bread by picking a horde list tyranid when I started playing but OMG do I have a lot of bugs.

List of shtuff I need to paint:

8 Hormagants
30 Fleshborer Termagants (maybe another 10 on top of that, not sure)
10 Devourer Termagants
6 Tyranid Warriors
Weapon arms for various Monstrous Creatures
4 Sets Twin Linked MC Devourers
1 Set Scything Talons
Doom of Malan'tai (finish sculpting the brain)
3 Hive Guard
2 Mycetic Spores

List of Shtuff I have finished:

Carnifex
Trygon
Hive Tyrant, with Wings
3 Zoanthropes

So yeah....UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
However I have carried my sketchbook pretty much everywhere.

Lately I've been very enamoured with some of the girls' Doctor Who costumes. (Uber nerd alert) I've gone and I've completed the preliminary design for my own 'ultimate' Doctor Who costume. I'm super excited about it as I've seen no one else with the same idea on the web, at least.

Unfortunately, due to the move my sewing machine is still packed away in storage, so making it by Dragoncon this year was out of the question for certain. Currently my goal will be for Dragoncon 2013. Should be plenty of time. Of course there will perhaps be a twelfth Doctor by then, but hopefully that won't be too much of a problem for me.

Sketches will follow eventually, especially after my drawing skills improve! There are exactly 2 other players locally, but we are attacting more players.

So the basics. Infinity is a squad based tabletop combat game set in the dystopian future (blade runner, cyberpunk). This is what first got me aside from the models looking fantastic.

I have played other skirmish games (Malifaux and Warmachine) but I find I do not care for the steampunk stuff, the Victorian era holds little interest for me.

So where was I, oh yea, Infinity, the rules are super solid, and available for free on the website www.infinitythegame.com They also provide several other downloads and printouts to help you get going, free of charge.

My 2 gaming friends are playing Yu Jing and Ariadna, I am playing Aleph (more human than human). Super fun game, with lots you can do, and react to what the other player does.

Sorry I have not been on in forever, super busy playing games!!!!
Shadowseer Kimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12299797984861522016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-87837271978836799572012-07-20T18:43:00.005-07:002012-07-20T18:43:58.003-07:00My first few 6th Edition GamesSo I have had a few 6th edition games under my belt, and I have to say I am really liking things so far, a lot of new fun things to play around with. The change to fleet hurt me a little bit, but overall the game is so much better, its like a new life has been breathed into it. With mysterious objectives and terrain, the game is getting more interesting, and so far my games have been pretty cinematic.

My first game was myself on a team with my tyranid playing friend, and we were going against 3 non tyranids. It was so cinematic, and the 5 of us just had a blast, it was so much fun to just watch the hive fleet nom face, mwahahahhaha.
He picked eldar as his army, and is painting them in a My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic theme, basing specific model types after the characters in the show. Its an awesome unique idea, and I cannot wait to see how people react to seeing this. That is not why I am writing though.

We played a small game on our kitchen floor, using cans and egg cartons, as well as my primer cans, as terrain as we do not have terrain and a board just yet (That is to come hopefully soon). The game was very interesting as I taught him the basics of the game, though it started out with my Hive Fleet (now named Hive Fleet Chrysallis at my brother's suggestion) destroying his Craftworld Equestria. There was an odd turn of events though, as his guardians on his right flank turned the combat around, taking out the threats on that side as my Hive Fleet on the other flank was doing significant damage to him. Once his right flank was free though he swooped around and the game ended with him tabling me. He did very well, the game played out very interestingly, and needless to say I have my brother hooked on the game.

The best part of this all, it means I have someone in my apartment to play with even when I cannot go to the game shops to do tourneys. This rocks.Emerald Rose Widowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03250147222138536366noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986424272804151982.post-55188470848982634852011-11-29T20:26:00.000-08:002011-11-29T20:26:23.027-08:00New WorkspaceSo I have finally gotten around to getting my painting workspace halfway decent to work with and paint in. My main issue in this apartment is lighting as the living room does not have its own light like I would like it to. So as you will see in the pictures below, I decided to buy some shop lights with some daylight bulbs for them to blast down up on my area. These are clamped to a towel rack which is on my wall, and it creates wonderful lighting for my painting area, I can finally see well enough to get some work done. The only things I need now are a magnifying boom light, and some kind of wall mounted tool holding thingamajig.
I had seen the game demo that's set up in the Local Game Store here and have read through the rules and it looks like a lot of fun. Sadly I've not had a chance to play it, but I will post a review just as soon as I'm able.

MERCS is a small squad skirmish game based in a futuristic,
mega-corporate run world. MERCS are the Corporate Security forces that are now
the military might of the world. There are 9 factions that are still world
powers and currently 6 of them have been released for play. Each faction is
different from the rest and has pros and cons. There's a good review of 5 of the 6 current factions here.

The game itself is pretty clever and quick. Each side
chooses 3 to 5 models (no point costs!) from a faction and battles are fought
on a 2'x 3' board.

Models go in initiative order and can choose to Hold, Move
or Combat. Movement is measured by a template that is also the stat card. Each
model has a Movement Point (MP) stat that allows it to move and/or turn more
than 90 degrees (the first 90 is free). There's also a feature called 'snap to
cover' that allows any model (even if unable to move) to jump or dive a
base-length towards cover.

Combat is pretty straight forward. Each model has a Firing
Number (FN) that is the target to get (equal or better) for a successful shot or
melee attack. Elevation, cover, facing and distance can all affect this.

There are Combat Class Maneuvers and Advanced Combat
Maneuvers that models can perform to increase effectiveness and strategy. CCMs
are listed on stat cards and specific to certain models. Fire & Move and
Load/Aim are a couple of examples of CCMs. ACMs are advanced tactics that
anyone can perform. Bounding is basically one model giving another covering
fire in order to gain +1 MP, Suppression is simply that, suppressive fire to
make other models keep their heads down and Overwatch is waiting to take shots
at those who stick their heads out of cover.

I really do like this game despite the lack of vehicles (I
do love my vehicles), because it makes you think. There’s no sure fire “This
army wins” to it. Each faction has it’s own strengths. That the game is d10
based doesn’t hurt either, that’s my favorite die! The models are beautiful
too! I was intimidated for a while that I wouldn’t be able to do them justice.
Hopefully photos will follow soon.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06094231701233567830noreply@blogger.com0
